The Card Catalog

The Card Catalog is a guide to all books and materials in the library. It is an index to the total library collection. Books are represented by a "3x5" index card filed and arranged alphabetically in the card catalog.
A book may be located by any of the following:

  1. Author Card - one may find a book by looking for the card that is alphabetized under the author's name.
  2. Title Card - one may find a book by looking for the card that is alphabetized under the title of the book.
  3. Subject Card - one may find a book by looking through the cards filed under the name of the subject.
Each of these cards is easy to recognize in the card catalog. Outside the trays are guide letters to enable the user to locate the cards easily.

Four points to consider in locating the cards in the card catalog:
  1. Abbreviations at the beginning of the first line on a card are alphabetized as though they were spelled out. So, you would look for Dr. as though it were spelled as Doctor and Mt. as if it were spelled as Mountain.
  2. All last names that begin with Mc are filed as if they began with Mac.
  3. Numbers are filed as if they were spelled out. Look for book titles starting with 50 or 100 as if they began with fifty or one hundred.
  4. The word The, A, and An at the beginning of a title are disregarded in filling title cards. One would locate The alchemist under Alchemist.
